Mommy Fitness: 5 weeks post-preggers

January 24, 2012

I had my first real workout this past Saturday at the “Walk for Life” in San Francisco. I’m not sure how long we marched for, but instead of getting picked up at the finish line, we (David and I) decided to walk back to the starting line! We even got lost on the way back, which made the effort THAT much harder. I was carrying Gabriel in a Baby Bjourn the entire time, so my back was starting to kill me. Gabriel LOVES to be next to me. I seriously have maybe a few waking hours by myself and it’s always around 11pm at night. Every day I feel like I’m sitting on my butt nursing somewhere…whether that be the living room, my bedroom, my mother’s house, etc. That’s why I’m laying on my tummy right now while typing on my laptop on the ground. I need to give my bum a rest!

I had my post-partum follow up appointment with my doctor today. Usually they schedule it for six weeks, but I am a week ahead at just 5 weeks after giving birth! It was very quick. She noted that my uterus and ovaries were back into place and I was recovering perfectly – especially since I didn’t require stitches. She also ok’d me to workout….which means, I get to go to the gym! Of course, logistically that is tough. The baby hasn’t set a schedule yet and I don’t have any milk in reserves. I get incredibly anxious when I’m away from Gabriel, even for an hour! So my goal tomorrow is to pump so I can take a kickboxing class at 6pm. We will see! I may have to start all my workouts from home at first. I usually do that anyways.

This past Saturday I also took a shot of my belly nearly five weeks after delivering. It’s amazing how you grow to love your belly and the baby inside of you – and to all of a sudden have it be gone. This goes back to wanting things you don’t have. When I was pregnant, I yearned for the days when I wasn’t. Now that I’m not pregnant, I miss my blooming belly!

I miss my belly more when I see the leftovers a 9-month pregnancy leaves you with! While I didn’t gain an incredible amount of weight I still have weight to lose! My hips are still wide. My waist is still thick. My face (to me) is still very fat.

So! Now that I am cleared to workout, my goal is to start S-L-O-W-L-Y. It’s important to not go too hard too fast, especially if your body has been through a traumatic experience. Since I worked out all throughout the pregnancy it shouldn’t be too tough. I plan on also eating a little better. I’m so proud of myself! I haven’t eaten much candy or lattes since I last wrote that as my goal. It feels really good to be disciplined…although in the process it feels tough!

Goals this week:
1) Start incorporating exercise

2) Move my treadmill into the house (it’s in the garage)

3) Stop eating after 8pm

4) Eat small meals throughout the day

5) Stretch and walk more

    Hello Maria,
I was looking for a little inspiration, so I googled filipina fitness just to see where I end up and I ended up on your site. =) I am glad I did. You are such an inspiration and you look amazing.
    How was your journey?
I am currently training for my first fitness competition. So far, its been a wacky challenging, but a fun ride.
    Take care.

Hi Mitzi! How exciting! I’ve never competed in fitness, only bikini…Just create a good plan and follow through. Make sure you work on your stage presentation and walking in heels 🙂

My trip was amazing. It seems so far away now…since returning it’s been hectic! Thank you for your kind words, it means a lot. I will be working on getting an ‘amazing’ body soon enough!
